GMS 6-8 Principal Spotlight - 9.27.24

Welcome to the GMS Spotlight!

September 27, 2024

The numbers:  800 and 96%

Once again, AMAZED!  Nearly 800 4th - 8th grade students and adults left the building, whisper quiet, for an extended safety drill.  They exited the building in less than 2 minutes, then followed additional instructions from staff.  Thank your kids for being such responsible humans!

True.  There’s a bug going around, and when kids are sick (especially a fever), they should stay home.  Also true, 8th graders had an impressive weekly attendance rate of over 96%!   Most students with great attendance experience less anxiety, feel more confident regarding classwork, acquire less homework, have better grades, are more connected to peers, are happier, and learn more!

In the Classroom

It's egg-citing times in 6th grade science! It's the EGG DROP!

Before construction, students gave 3 solid reasons why their device would work. Then, during construction, they made multiple observations using fake eggs and adjusted their devices accordingly. The 6-foot drop happened today (Friday) in the classroom. You could feel the excitement and smell the results from miles away. All survivors will participate in the much anticipated Lobby Drop on Monday! Ask a 6th grader about their device and today's results!

7th graders are currently learning about stress management in health class. Over the last couple of weeks they have practiced and reflected on a variety of strategies to manage stress in healthy ways. This week, they spent time with Mrs. Waterhouse and Lu (a therapy dog) to experience the benefits of animals as a way to help regulate and manage emotions or stress.

And…

Congrats to the GMS students involved in the 152nd Cumberland Fair!

Next week - October. We’re ready for another great month!
