Twenty years from now, as students make their way to school buses and cars at the end of their school day on a beautiful autumn afternoon, the only thing these 4, 5, 6, and 7-year-olds will know is that their school is beautiful and located in the midst of a Maine forest, gently rolling hills, and running brooks. They will not know the concerns, debates, hesitation, bumps, and turns it took to plan and build their school, but they will undoubtedly feel the swell of pride their parents, grandparents, teachers, and neighbors have for the building they call 'school.'

A new school facility is a sacrifice for all who must invest in it. I know that this is a difficult place for many to be. Undoubtedly, it raises questions about whether it is the right time, the right price tag, the right piece of land, or the right approach. These questions are very natural and should be asked. I can assure all voters, though, that the plan before you is the right one--and the only one--that makes sense for the students, their parents, their teachers, and the entire community.

The people of Cumberland and North Yarmouth have always supported their schools. This long tradition, dating back to the SAD's founding in 1966, has created and sustained one of the premier school districts in the state, a school district steeped in immense pride and one that bears the accomplishments of nearly three generations of graduates. Good schools make good communities, and vice versa, and this interdependent relationship of the two is what sets Greely apart from virtually all others. Pride in the perpetual academic, athletic, and artistic accolades of generations of young people never fades here, and the SAD's long and unique 56-year history is a testament to this.

Please know that putting forward a plan of this magnitude is not made lightly. It has involved over three years of planning to bring the voters the best plan possible that balances the resources of the community with the education, welfare, and care of generations of children, both present and future. As the Latin saying goes, "Duc exercitum." Greely Rangers Lead the Way, now and always.

Regards,
Jeff Porter
