Thursday was busy in the district as we held three separate events. We welcomed Dr. Tadashi Suzuki, Mika Tamura, and Dr. Tetsuhiro Sakai from Aomori City Rotary, Japan, to a reception in celebration of an elementary school printmaking art exchange, Hashi-Maine 2022. Many thanks to Lynda McCann-Olsen, an art teacher at MIW, for her work in coordinating this exchange and displaying the printmaking pieces from MIW and Aomori at the GCA.
 
Last evening we held an ALICE parent informational session led by School Resource Officer Amie Owen, Cumberland Police Chief Chip Rumsey, school administrators, and me. Also on Thursday was the annual post-secondary fair organized by GHS school counselors Melissa Fowler, Johna Mulligan, and Alex Mason. With 351 people in attendance, there were representatives from the Job Corps of Maine, 2 & 4 year colleges from California to Maine and Canada, PG schools, Study Abroad/GAP YEAR programs, US Military academies, Military branches (active & reserve), and the Finance Authority of Maine.

A reminder that the first public informational session for the proposed new primary school in North Yarmouth will be held on Tuesday, September 27 @ 6:00 PM in the GCA. This session will be live streamed and recorded. A second, duplicate session will be held on Wednesday, October 12 @ 6:00 PM at the North Yarmouth Community Center. Voters will be asked to make a decision about the new school proposal on Election Day, November 8.

Notices from the Office of the Superintendent

MEA Testing

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I am writing to share information regarding student testing that our district will be conducting throughout the month of October.  As you may be aware, Maine Law requires public schools to have all students in grades three through eight, and the second year of high school, participate in the Maine Educational Assessment (MEA) for Mathematics and English Language Arts/Literacy testing.  Maine uses this data for accountability purposes and it is one of the primary tools used by the state to determine the effectiveness of a school and its programs.  

The state uses the Measure of Academic Progress Assessment from the Northwest Evaluation Association in both the fall and the spring. It will be given in grades 5, 8, and 2nd year of high school this fall.  

We know participation in this assessment will be of value to our students and we view it as an opportunity for learning, not just testing.  MSAD #51 has always used state data to help inform our decision-making.  The school level data is used to identify areas of strength and areas of improvement.  Looking at trends, we can decide to make changes in programming to help with areas of improvement within a building or a grade level. Using past data, we were able to pinpoint areas and provide successful support to students and teachers to make the necessary shifts in instruction.

Individual student data identifies areas of academic strengths and challenges for each student.  This data point, combined with classroom assessments and teacher input, can give parents a full picture of their child’s academic progression.

MSAD #51 is committed to providing the best educational programming and support for our families. Our school principals will provide additional information regarding the specifics of when testing will take place in each school. 

We hope this letter outlining the MEA testing will give you information regarding the upcoming assessment. If you have questions regarding your child’s testing, please contact your building principal.

MSAD #51 Board of Directors Information

Effective August 22, unless otherwise noted, all meetings will take place at 6:00 pm in the Gyger Room at Greely High School.  For those of you unfamiliar with that room, the Gyger Room is where the Board met pre-COVID and can be accessed from the GHS parking lot (the side without the electronic sign).

Greely PTO News

The Grand Event is Back!

The Greely PTO is thrilled to announce the return of The Grand Event on Wednesday, October 19th at Mabel I. Wilson from 4:30-6:30pm! Pre-K – 3rd graders are encouraged to invite Grandparents or Grand Friends to tour their school, make a souvenir, take a picture and create memories together! The flyer is attached. Parents, be on the lookout for the SignUp Genius if you’re interested in volunteering.
